What is a wagering requirement?

The wagering requirement is the single most important number in any bonus, and it is almost never in the headline. Understanding it is the difference between a bonus that is worth taking and one designed to keep your deposit.

How it works

When you accept a bonus, you cannot simply withdraw it. You have to bet it a set number of times first. That number is the wagering requirement, written as a multiple like 35x or 40x. A 100 euro bonus at 40x wagering means you must place 4,000 euros of bets before the bonus and its winnings become withdrawable.

That is a lot of turnover, and it is meant to be. The house has an edge on every bet, so betting 4,000 euros costs you money on average along the way. The operator knows most players will not clear the requirement, which is why the bonus exists: it is a marketing cost that usually pays for itself.

The traps inside the requirement

Two details make a wagering requirement harder than the multiple suggests. The first is game weighting. Not every bet counts fully toward the requirement.
